Politicians on Bench

Filed under: Comedy — Vijaikrishna @ 2:42 am

Now that Puli’s (read in English as Tiger) chapter almost closed and the elections are also over, what will our vetti politicians and celebrities do ?

Vai-ko – He will take up the cause of dwindling Tiger population of India. Afterall, tigers are his favorite subject. He will go on a marathon walk across India and play volleyball everyday. One or two people who are still in his party will abscond before his return.

Thol alias TN’s Che – He will do a balti and maintain that his focus has always been on Cheetahs and not pulis. If he also stops acting in his unreleased film,  all conflicts will soon come to an end.

Fruit Maaran – He will shave at last. This will keep him occupied for a few more years. Once finished, he will search for Nakeeran Gopal to shave his mustache

Ram-Dos -Will seek alliance with Raja-pa-kshe for the elections in Tamilnadu in 2011.

Am-ma – Will blame on the “DeeEmmKe” government for the death of tigers in various forests across India. Will continue to talk about how the pulis were encouraged to multiply during her vaathiyaar’s tenure.

Sigaram-Raja – Will travel with other actors to find what the government did with the Padmashree award that he returned. When he understands that they have given it to someone else, he will negotiate with the government to telecast “Thekathi Ponnu” on National Television

Promise King – With the help of the Bachan of the south, act as puli in his next movie

Gaptain Vijay – He sends a circular to all leading dailies “Evalo pirabakran venumna varalaam aana naan dhan unmayaana captain pirabakarannu thamizh naatuke theriyum. So naan dhan next CM.”

Karuna – He will be busy negotiating berths for fruit akka and MA. When reporters ask about his reaction – He would ask them to check Murasoli the following day.

The next day on Murasoli, “Anbu nenjangale, netru silar ennidam vandhu sila poiyaana thagavalai sonnargal. Adhai ketavudan en nenjam kodhithadhu, maar adaiththadhu, kangalil neer perukeduthu odiyadhu. En Manaiviyar Rasathi Ammal, Thunaiviyar Dhayalu ammaludan Kalaignar tholaikaatchiyil,  Captain Prabhakaran thiraipadathai paarthen. Padathin mudivile Veerabadran dhan saagiraan. Prabhakaran saagavilai, saagavilai saagavilai. Adhai kandhu peru magizhchi kondu udane indha kadidhathai ezhudhugiren. …”

Uncertainity and the art of motivation

Filed under: General — Vijaikrishna @ 1:57 am

The last 6 months have been not been great on the professional front.  Having moved back to India, I wasn’t expecting the kind of exposure and learning that I had in London. Though the stay was brief, it gave me a wider perspective of things around me, broke certain myths & pre conceived notions that I had, taught me that I shouldn’t worry about things that I don’t have control on.

Back home, I wasn’t too happy about my situation and became too lazy. Being the only person from my team in my current office, I was plain bored. I wasn’t contributing at levels that I usually expect myself to. I was doing the bare minimum to survive and get accepted ratings. Then the Bangalore trip happened where I was interacting with top business development folks, became an enthu cutlet and slogged my ass on a proposal. Once back from Bangalore, I was back to my lazy routine. I blamed it on the current economic scenario and the overall sentiment in the market. “People are losing jobs and I have mine intact” I told myself. I waited for the uncertain environment to end and believed I will be back to my best when that happens. Deep inside, I knew I was making a big mistake of not doing justice to my work and to myself. I was doing nothing about it.

Motivation sometimes is intentional and sometimes it just happens. For a while, i wanted to read “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” by Rashmi Bansal. The book showed me what I should do.  It is a collection of inspiring stories of 25 IIM A graduates who started chose to tread a path of their own making. The underlying common theme of all stories is “passion”. This book helped me in rediscovering the passion that I once had for my work. I started to look for things that I believed will help in sustaining the passion.

Back in B School, during a class on entrepreneurship, our tutor told us to write our goals, and read them everyday. I mocked at it then and never practised it. Recently when Pawan, a dear friend wrote about the same in the internal blogs that we have in Infosys, I followed for a few days and then forgot about it. But now, I have gone back to the sheet and I am seeing the results.

Here is the preachy bit.

1. In a sheet of paper, write your goals and read them every day. This will keep reminding you what you want to achieve in life. This sheet of paper gives me the belief and hope. After all hope is not only a good thing but the best of things.

2. Often, think of good thing that you get as a result of achieving these goals. A rewarding career, more money, chance for higher studies, a happy family. These things are a catalyst for us to work towards the goal.

3. Look forward to do something during the day to reward yourself at the end of a long day. This could be anything and everything. I look forward to read a book of my favorite author or to swim everyday to relax and reward myself for putting my best foot forward.

These will be of immense help once we start facing the hurdles on the way where we start focusing on the obstacles than on the goals. These will help us to be on “Goal Mode” than on “Obstacle Mode”.

Let me know if this works for you.

Royally Challenged

Filed under: Cricket — Vijaikrishna @ 2:55 pm

It is tough being a fan of the Royal Challengers. I have seen worser things as a fan of the England Football team.

My love for Bangalore Royal Challengers doesn’t come from Mallaya or his poster girl Deepika. I am a big fan of Rahul Dravid and I support whichever team he plays for. That includes Karnataka, Kent, Scotland apart from Team India. And I am a Bangalore vaasi.

While the team gave me a pleasant shock by beating the other Royal team, we are back to square one now and competing with the defending champs for the wooden spoon. What went wrong ? Everything. In the 5 games we have been 0/1 in four games. In three games, 0/1 was after the first ball and in the fourth after the second ball of the innings. The power play is meant to give the batsmen a chance to boost their run rate, but the RCs are boosting the rate at which they are getting back to the pavilion. Robin Uthappa is the master blaster who hasn’t performed even closer to the levels that made Shastri scream “You deserve Uthappams”. The phirangs have been completely out of sorts. Kallis is more worried about her cheerleading sister, Steyn still feeling that this is a paid vacation and the big brother of all Kevin Peterson still haven’t sorted out the shortest version since the WI tamed him with the Stanford currency. The bench strength is also very poovar.

Now that RD has gone on paternity leave and KP going back to England to play the WI, I dont see us finishing above 8th.

Play Cameron White. He has attitude, but he is very good in this form of cricket. Do not drop Ryder. Drop Uthappam and get in Jaffer. Can he be worse ? And who will captain the team in KP’s absence ?

I see a “come play for us” plea from King Mallaya to Rahul Dravid. I also foresee Mallaya saying “this is not my cup of beer” and selling the team.

You guys reading Fakeiplplayer blog ? It is hilarious :) The aandhaiyar* of IPL.

The ‘Haripi Algorithm’

Filed under: Comedy — Vijaikrishna @ 2:37 pm

I request all to read this first.

For all those who think Haripi is a complex person, I suggest you to read the following algorithm written by Prasad who incidentally is Haripi’s cousin. This will make things easy for you to interact with Haripi.

Step 1: Haripi posts a question
Step 2: Haripi posts next question
Step 3: Haripi starts answering first question
Step 4: Haripi starts to answering the first question from ur point of view
Step 5: Haripi starts thinking for you also to get multiple answers for questions posted earlier
Step 6: He builds AI, NLP, Expert Systems, Fuzzy logic into the system taking craziness to crazy heights
Step 7: Haripi repeats step 1.

While this iteration goes on, your job is just to keep quiet. Look, how easy he has made it for you.

Introducing Haripi

Filed under: Comedy — Tags: — Vijaikrishna @ 6:15 pm

This dood is a very close friend of mine. And he is getting married in a week’s time. Since he is the man of the moment, I thought I should introduce him. I wrote the piece below in my previous blog. There will be a couple of more posts  about him in the next 1 week. Macha, I am dedicating this part to you and Jana :) . Sorry for the distarpance :)

You would have seen his blog here. Many have had a great opinion of this guy. People perceive him as a funny guy. But they dont know that he is a total mokkai.

We will be happy to have someone who can understand your thoughts. But Haripi is way far ahead .. He can talk for you and he can also think for you.

He will start a question, “What do you think of this?” and even before one could reply, he will say “Do you think like this ? But wont this happen this way?”

A dialogue with Haripi means he will talk on behalf of both people and you can remain silent.

And he has this ability to torture you with his questions.

Haripi: Dei, heard that our college is moving to a different location next year.
Me: I dunno da
Haripi: Perungudi or Palavakkam

Makkale, even after replying ‘I dunno’ this fellow is going ahead and asking the next question.

Another instance, this was after we played an online quiz . This is how he tortured Prasad on Yahoo Messenger.

Haripi: We have answered 52 out of 70 questions.
Prasad, knowing about Haripi chose to remain silent. But our man did not stop.
Haripi: Do you think our performance is good enough for us to come in the top 10 among 200 probable participants?
Prasad was still silent
Haripi: Do you think other colleges would have also performed at the same level?

Prasad logged out of YM.

And then the worst was last Friday night. Around 11 in the night he called me.

Me: Dei, wat da ?
He: Mamaa, I am in Devi da, watching ‘Chitiram Pesudhadi’
Me: Good da.
He: Movie is brilliant da. Bhavana is too cute.
Me: I know da ..
He: This movie was released first da ..It bombed. Now re-released and it is a big hit.
Me: hmmm
He: Maama, the learning da .. “Marketing is very important for a movie”
Me: (aahaa … Haripi started :( )
He: Seri, when are you joining da .. May 9th ?
Me: No da. May 4th.
He: When is your marriage?
Me: July.
He: So, 10 days leave edupiya ? (Will you take off 10 days?)
Me: Dunno da, lets see ..
He: 2 weeks leave edu da .. (Take two weeks off)
Me: Paakalaam
He: So where are you goin ?
Me: What?
He: Enga da pora ? (Where are you going?)
Me: Enna enga pora ?
He: Dei, after Marriage where are going (and he starts to blush. I could feel it)
Me: Why cant u ask this directly?
He: No da, so many people are there in the theater, thats why i did not want to use the word ‘honeymoon’
Me: Seri, we can talk tomorrow. (And I cut the call)

He was calling me during the interval of the movie and see what kind of a conversation we had.

Can anyone save us from him?

How my cousin changed my life …

Filed under: General — Vijaikrishna @ 3:26 pm

This happened when I was waiting for my Engineering Counseling. Suggestions and Ideas came from all corners as what Branch i need to choose and other stuff. Several permutations & combinations were done to map college with specialisation. My parents were naturally excited to put me into engineering.

There was this cousin of mine who was in the US then. He was the first engineer in our family and we cousins were encouraged (read forced) to take up engineering.

My mom would say, “Sundar maadhiri varanum life la” ( One should come up in life like Sundar)

STD calls were made to find out what he studied in his engineering and it was unanimously decided that I should choose Mechanical Engineering because Sundar studied the same and is now in US. So, I joined Mechanical Engineering.

Things were going on smoothly until my cousin Sundar came down from US on vacation. Mom got his appointment for me to discuss abt my career.

Sundar came and this is how our conversation went on.

Sundar : Hi da!! Enna, joined Engineering ?

Me: (Proudly) Yes Anna.

Sundar : Gud da. Which Branch ?

Me: Mechanical.

At this point of time his expression changed and I knew something was wrong.

Sundar: Why Mechanical ?

Me: Some useless gyan. Evergreen, unlimited job opportunities … And above all you also did the same.

Sundar: But I work as a Software Engg

Me : Oh !!! ( Adapaavi gala, ellathayum keteenga, Sundar ennava work pannaraan nu kekalaya ?? )

Sundar: Mechanical Engg waste da. Is it possible to change your branch now ?

Me already fainted.

Having said that, I duly completed my Mechanical Engineering and followed Sundar’s footsteps and worked as a Software Engineer.

This was atleast better. Another cousin of mine wanted me do to Masters in Physics and become a professor. Me escape :)

Naan Kadavul – Armchair View

Filed under: Cinema — Vijaikrishna @ 4:39 pm

Just back from seeing the much awaited “Naan Kadavul”. Tamil movie goers do not expect a run of the mill stuff from Bala.  But even his fans would not have expected a movie like “Naan Kadavul” from him. He has handled a very bold theme while showing a world that a majority of us would have not even known till now.

The movie is hard hitting and so violent that some scenes are better watched with the eyes closed. The script is the hero and the protagonist Arya doesn’t appear for more than 45 minutes. Pooja has done brilliantly as the female lead. We tend to remember the other characters especially for the way they accept the way they live as fate while not missing an opportunity to have a laugh. These scenes follow a pattern from Bala’s early movies.

Some thoughts while I was riding my bike back to home

1) Why does Bala always show that parents are the reason for his character’s sufferings? We saw that in Nanda, Pithamagan and now in Naan Kadavul

2) Is this the abridged version of the movie ? The film runs for a little over 2 hours.

3) The maestro has proved yet again that he is the king of re-recording. For all the golden globe, BAFTA and even the oscar, no one can match Raja in re-recording

4) I am glad that Bala did not cast Ajith in this movie.

5) Did the movie really merit 3 years of hard work and time ? I doubt. That is why I feel this is the not complete version that Bala wanted to show

6) How on earth did this movie get a U/A certificate from the censors ?

Naan Kadavul doesn’t definitely suck. It may not have merited the hype and anticipation. But next time you see a begger on the streets, you will be less harsh towards him.

Ghajini – Armchair View

Filed under: Songs — Tags: — Vijaikrishna @ 10:42 am

ARR’s latest Ghajini is topping the charts everywhere. So i thought let me write my view of it.

There are 5 songs in the album.

1) Guzaarish – Everyone’s favorite. A simple melody rendered very well by Javed Ali. His voice reminds me of Suresh Wadkar one of my favorite singers

2) Aye Bachu – Nothing much about this song.

3) Kaise Mujhe – I thought the lyrics were a little difficult to understand as the music masks the lyrics in many places. Benny Dayal has done a decent job but Shreya Ghosal walks away with the honors

4) Behkha – My favorite song in Ghajini. I found the composition a little non Rahmanesque. He has done a similar song before. ‘Kya Kare’ from Rangeela but not afterwards. Karthik is brilliant in this song. He is already a singer with a great following in the south. This song will no doubt make him more popular among the ‘Hindi music only’ audience.

5) Latoo – A peppy number which is my second favorite. Shreya Ghosal makes me listen this song again and again. I loved ‘the eagle has landed’ prelude.

Rediff says Rahman goes glourisly wild with Ghajini. Some even say this is his best till date. I don’t agree to either of these statements. But i will definitely listen to Ghajini for a few more days, not beyond that.
